When you discover Slovenian wines, you discover the soul of Slovenia!
Wine production in Slovenia has almost 2000 years of history. The combination of the mountainous and coastal climate with the local soil allows the production of high quality and great taste wines. The process of making Slovenian wine follows the ancestral heritage and the grapes are mostly harvested by hand, the old-fashioned way. The diversity of varieties and the high quality of wines are two of the keys to the success of Slovenian winemakers.
Slovenia has historically had three major wine producing regions: Podravje in the northeast, Posavje in the south and Primorska on the Adriatic coast in the southwest. Within the country, the regions differ both in terms of technological features of grape cultivation, and in the varieties grown.
This winemaking region borders on Italy and has the warmest climate among the main Slovenian wine-producing regions: hot and dry summers, mild winters and strong winds in the off-season. It is the largest region, and it justifiably includes the largest number of Slovenia's top wine producers, where about 50% of all Slovenian wine is produced.
The main products of the Maritime region are white wines, but quite famous red wines are also produced - Refosco (Refosco, a variety also widely known in Italy), and Tehran (Tehran). Due to the red karst soil (terra rosa), the latter variety has an extremely full and rounded taste of the finished wines.
The region of Gorishka Brda is the most developed in terms of winemaking, where it is possible to find wineries producing white wine varieties, such as Ribolla, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Grigio, as well as red varieties - Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
In the Slovenian part of Istria, famous for its white wine Malvasia, the red variety Refosko is also grown.
In the Vipava Valley, in addition to the classic white and red varieties, autochthonous wines such as Zelen, Pinela, Picolit are grown.
The wine-growing region of Primorska has four wine-producing districts:
1. istra (Istra),
3. Goriška Brda.
4. Vipavska dolina (Vipavska dolina).
